GERMANTOWN — The depths of winter might soon be on the horizon, but Germantown officials this week were thinking spring as they finalized a business owner’s application request.

The Village Board voted unanimously Monday in favor of granting a conditional-use permit to First Choice Tree Care Inc., which is occupying a dormant 4-acre property at N120-W15916 Freistadt Road.

First Choice, which operates in Mequon, will uproot its operations to the new Germantown location, which previously housed Schaefer Bros. Pump Co. since 1970. The latter business has since moved its operations to West Bend.

Jeff Retzlaff, planning and zoning administrator, said First Choice’s plans for the Freistadt Road property fit in with the village’s long-range master plan, which runs through 2020, and is in the midst of being updated.

Terms of the board’s approval state First Choice can conduct operations at the Freistadt Road property from 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. The site will function as a storage facility and operations hub for the business. Retzlaff said there are no plans to conduct retail sales at the site.

In addition to landscaping and horticulture services, plans call for First Choice offering snow plowing during the off-season winter months.

In a memo to village officials, Retzlaff pointed out one note of caution from his professional standpoint.

“Given the size and characteristics of the business, as described in the application, staff’s only concern is that the business operate in a manner that does not become a nuisance to the residential properties to the east,” Retzlaff wrote in the memo.

Before acting on First Choice’s plans for the property, the board held a public hearing. No one spoke for or against the company’s operations plans.
