SLINGER — The village’s Plan Commission recently recommended granting a conditional use permit that would the move and expansion of an existing village business at a nearby larger location.

Tony Callen currently operates Cal Fitness in a 2,500 square-foot space at 331 E. Washington St. He sought the CUP so he could move into a space of about 5,000 square-feet just a short distance away at 323 E. Washington St. to allow expansion. Both locations are owned by the same landlord — Joyce Weyer — who has been working with Callen to find a location with more space. Callen plans on moving his business to the new location which was formerly the site of Sonny’s Variety Store.

Village Planner Marty Marchek said “this is the expansion of an existing business that is growing more robust.”

“I really need to have more space to operate my indoor athletic/fitness facility and I will have more hours where the business will be open at the new location,” Callen told the Plan Commission.

Marchek said the new CUP is essentially the same as the permit Callen has for his current operation except for a minor adjustment in the hours of operation. The operational plan for the business calls for the hours of operation to be Monday-Friday from 5 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 6 a.m.-3 p.m.

“I don’t have any problem with their operating hours,” said Plan Commission Chairman and Village President Russ Brandt. “They are far enough away from a residential area that there shouldn’t be a problem.”

According to the business’s proposed operational plan, Cal Fitness will offer fitness classes as well as equipment for self use. The client will have the option to join a fitness class or workout on their own during a class without feeling they are interrupting the class. Fitness classes will include: Boot camp, cardio kickboxing, TRX suspension training, Zumba, Tabata, circuit training, yoga, strength training, dynamic trio, sculpt ‘n tone and core training.

Special service will include personal training, group training, kid camps and day care. Equipment available for use will include treadmills, ellipticals, cable machines, push and pull sleds, medicine balls, physioballs and free weights.
