GERMANTOWN — The depths of
winter might soon be on the horizon, but Germantown officials
recently were thinking spring as they finalized a business owner’s
The Village Board voted unanimously earlier this month in favor of
granting a conditional use permit to First Choice Tree Care Inc.,
which is occupying a dormant 4-acre property at N120 W15916
Freistadt Road in Germantown.
First Choice, which operates in Mequon, will uproot its operations
to the new Germantown location, which previously housed Schaefer
Bros. Pump Co. since 1970. The latter business has since moved its
operations to West Bend.
Jeff Retzlaff, planning and zoning administrator, said First
Choice’s plans for the Freistadt Road property fit in with the
village’s long-range master plan, which runs through 2020, and is in
the midst of being updated.
Terms of the board’s approval state First Choice can conduct
operations at the Freistadt Road property from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
daily. The site will function as a storage facility and operations
hub for the business. Retzlaff said there are no plans to conduct
retail sales at the site.
In addition to landscaping and horticulture services, plans call for
First Choice offering snow plowing during the off-season winter
In a memo to village officials, Retzlaff pointed out one note of
caution from his professional standpoint.
“Given the size and characteristics of the business, as described in
the application, staff’s only concern is that the business operate
in a manner that does not become a nuisance to the residential
properties to the east,” Retzlaff wrote in the memo.
Before acting on First Choice’s plans for the property, the board
