WEST BEND — Kwik Trip will continue to expand in West Bend through buying and rebranding a pre-existing gas station.

The company’s real estate development manager, Troy Mleziva, confirmed the purchase of the Citgo gas station on Paradise Drive and South River Road in West Bend. He said negotiations progressed for several months, and while the sale was likely to be completed in early January, any word or action before it officially went though would be speculation. Deals fall apart or change all the time, he said, and in this case, Citgo gas stations are owned individually, so that changes the nature of the deal.

Citgo owners Kathy and George Muth said in a statement they had been considering alterations to the store, so when an offer came from Kwik Trip they decided it was an opportune chance to sell and make the biggest change — in ownership.

The Muths said that after 21 years owning and managing Egbert & Guido’s Express Inc., it was time to get out of the business.

They built the store and opened in February 1998 on land George grew up on, and named it after his father Egbert and uncle Guido.

“We are pleased and honored that we have been able to serve thousands of loyal customers over the years, many from the local neighborhoods,” George said.

It was an emotional decision, Kathy said.

“The real blessing has been the dedicated and friendly staff that we have had over the years,” she said. “There have been many tears shed this week as we have said good-bye to our loyal customers and fellow staff members who are like family.”

Citgo has one other location in the city, and Kwik Trip will now have three stores after its new gas station and convenience mart is opened.
