WAUKESHA — It’s a bitterly cold Wednesday afternoon, but inside the kitchen at Pho King Awesome, at 316 W. Sunset Drive on Waukesha’s south side, the steam wafting from stock pots is all the warmth that’s needed, as cooks hum about preparing meals.

The dining room of the eatery may be quiet, but the kitchen staff is cooking up just a few of the many takeout and delivery orders they get throughout the day and evening.

To help process those orders, the Vietnamese restaurant began using the online food ordering service Grubhub about two years ago.

The restaurant currently uses its own delivery drivers to get the food out to its hungry customers, but it could someday have the option of hiring Grubhub drivers to help with that.

Grubhub has been providing online ordering services in Waukesha and Washington counties since 2015, according to a company spokesman, but in November the company introduced its own fleet of delivery drivers into the Waukesha area.

The introduction of the delivery services here was just one part of a massive expansion that saw the Chicago-based company bring its delivery service to more than 200 new cities and towns across the country in 2018. The cities and towns to which the service expanded largely fall outside major metro areas and are later adopters of the on-demand economy.

Our region

Grubhub currently offers services to more than 50 local restaurants in Washington and Waukesha counties, said Demarquis McIntyre, a public relations associate for the company.

The list of restaurants the company serves in the region also includes fastfood favorites Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken. The offering is part of a national partnership Grubhub cemented with Yum Brands, the parent company of Taco Bell and KFC, in early 2018.

A search of the Grubhub website at noon on Wednesday found at least five restaurants in Waukesha using the service, including Taco Bell, KFC, Pho King and Buffalo Wild Wings. It was unclear, however, if the restaurants were using Grubhub delivery drivers, or just the company’s online ordering services.

In Menomonee Falls, KFC and Buffalo Wild Wings, Firehouse Subs, Quiznos, La Cabana Mexican Grill, Anmol Restaurant, and Rosati’s were among the restaurants listed that were served by the company, again without the distinction of whether the eateries were using the company’s delivery services, or their own.

Farther east in Waukesha County, Grubhub online ordering or delivery services are apparently offered at several places in New Berlin and dozens of restaurants in Brookfield.

Among the eateries listed on the company’s website are the Sunny Side Up Cafe and Applebee’s in New Berlin; and Ming’s, Vishnu Foods, Shawarma House, and Potbelly Sandwich Shop in Brookfield.
