WEST BEND ó A vacant building along the cityís Main Street could meet the proverbial wrecking ball if West Bend leaders approve efforts to someday replace it with a new Pet Supplies Plus pet store.

Thatís according to documents before the cityís Plan Commission, which could consider steps tonight toward razing an empty storefront at 1605 S. Main St., located just behind the south-side Pick ín Save grocery outlet.

Development documents submitted to the commission indicate plans would involve replacing the small building with a new pet store.

ďI believe they want to be open ... around December,Ē Adam Hertel, an architect working on the project, said Monday afternoon. Groundbreaking, he said, could happen by June.

City Administrator Jay Shambeau said Monday the cityís Common Council could weigh in on a zoning amendment connected with the project. But he said a groundbreaking in June was realistic, noting council members expected to consider the topic later this month.

Efforts to contact a company official at the pet supply chainís headquarters were unsuccessful Monday.

The pet supplier runs several outlets in southeast Wisconsin, according to the companyís website, including in nearby Glendale and Brookfield.
