WEST BEND — City planning leaders this week green-lighted the next steps in a proposal to bring a new pet supply store to West Bend’s south side.

In a meeting that ended late Tuesday evening, Plan Commission members voted unanimously to approve the site plan for the proposed Pet Supplies Plus store, which an architect has said could open by late this year behind the Pick ’n Save grocery outlet along South Main Street.

Commissioners also recommended a zoning change tied to the matter; the city’s Common Council will have to finalize that, likely later this month.

Plans to build the retailer would involve demolishing a currently vacant storefront building at the corner of South Main and Butternut streets. An architect who’s helped work on the pet store project earlier this week said — if plans move smoothly — the demolition could start soon and allow for the new store opening by late this year.
