OCONOMOWOC — After 63 years of business as a downtown Oconomowoc staple, May Garden Center, 132 E. Wisconsin Ave., will be closing its doors, according to owner Mary May.

The store was first opened by owner Mark May’s father in October of 1956 and Mark took over the business in 1974.

May Garden Center has seen a lot of change since being opened, including the closing of three grocery stores in downtown, four pharmacies and two movie theaters.

The store offers lawn maintenance supplies and garden accessories.

Mark May said in a 2010 Freeman article that downtown Oconomowoc was “absolutely booming.”

May said in the article that his main focus at his store was one-on-one attention and decades of experience in the garden industry.

“I’ve trained hard and long to be the expert. That’s the only thing I have that Stein’s does not have,” May said. “We try very hard to give the absolutely correct answer.”
