BROOKFIELD — The Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce and Herzing University-Brookfield have established the Pride in Healthcare scholarship to empower members of the Greater Milwaukee LGBT community through pursuing or advancing their careers in the health care industry.

The Pride in Healthcare Scholarship awards each recipient a 50%-off tuition scholarship, up to $15,000 through Herzing University’s Brookfield campus.

The scholarship is open to LGBT employees of three chamber members in southeastern Wisconsin: Advocate Aurora Health Care; Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin; and Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin health network.“This scholarship will allow employees at three of our chamber members the opportunity to get the skills they need to advance their career to the next level and help build the next generation of LGBTQ leaders in the health care industry,” said Jason Rae, president & CEO of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, in a press release.

Another aspect of the scholarship is that recipients commit to volunteering a few hours a month to support the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce.

“That’s really a benefit of the partnership with the Chamber, ” said Jarvis Racine, campus president at Herzing University-Brookfield. “It’s not just about a scholarship, it’s about giving back to your community as well.”

According to the Movement Advancement Project, there are an estimated 172,424 LGBT adults in Wisconsin and this population experiences challenges seeking health care by being disrespected or denied service.

Despite existing protections, LGBTQ people face disturbing rates of health care discrimination — from harassment and humiliation by providers to being turned away by hospitals, pharmacists, and doctors, according to

“The LBGT community has an online business directory for our chamber and one of the most frequent searches has been in the health care field,” said Rae. “It’s one of the most intimate and personal for our people. The moment they walk in the door they have to divulge something personal about themselves and they want to make sure they find LGBT people or individuals who understand their health care challenges and needs.”

“In terms of disparities in the LBGT community you can talk about youth and the high level of suicide, you can talk about HIV and STD’s, you can talk about obesity, mental health and transgender individuals,” said Racine.
