Packers star tackles politics at Dem. convention

June 13, 2009

GREEN BAY — The biggest star at the Wisconsin Democratic Party convention isn't a politician.

It's Charles Woodson, the starting cornerback on the Green Bay Packers.

Woodson introduced Gov. Jim Doyle as the convention's keynote speaker on Friday night.

Shedding his no. 21 jersey for a dark suit, Woodson joked that he wasn't quite sure what he was doing on stage in front of hundreds of Democrats.

The former Heisman Trophy winner called Doyle a champion of education. He said Doyle is working to make college tuition and health care affordable.

Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker told the crowd he was excited he got to meet Woodson backstage.
