Wisconsin budget outlook still grim

June 10, 2009

MADISON - Wisconsin's state budget is expected to be short again in four years even after lawmakers approve the current spending plan.

The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau reported Tuesday that by mid-2013 the state will face a $2.2 billion hole.

That's assuming the current two-year spending proposal that runs through mid-2011 passes the Legislature. It relies on $2.1 billion in tax and fee increases, $3.7 billion in federal economic stimulus money and a 3.2 percent reduction in state tax dollar spending to balance.

But even after taking all those steps, the Fiscal Bureau numbers show the state likely will face another budget problem in two years.
