stalled near Antigo

ANTIGO - A county highway that crossed the Wolf River near Antigo is getting lots of attention, because there's no longer any bridge and the plans for replacing the span have been stalled.

That's cut off the main access to Antigo, forcing large trucks, school buses and other vehicles to travel rural roads never designed for such heavy use.

The bridge along Langlade County Highway A was removed over the summer, and the replacement project was scheduled to be done Sept. 15. But that was before the project ran into trouble with rocks in an area where critical footings were to be built.

Engineers and bridge contractors joined state Department of Natural Resources personnel at the bridge site Tuesday as they try to work out a solution.
