African cranes

BARABOO - Baraboo in south central Wisconsin is a long way from Africa, but the wild cranes of that continent will be the focus of new exhibits at one of the city's attractions — the International Crane Foundation.

The foundation is breaking ground Wednesday on construction of exhibits to display various African cranes, funded with a $2.9 million gift pledged last year by the Dohmen Family Foundation.

About $300,000 was pledged specifically to maintain field work with African cranes, which often involves conservation programs, investigating illegal trafficking of the birds and teaching communities to protect cranes and their habitat.

Crane foundation persident James Hook says the organization wants to show people how environmental problems occurring throughout the world can have an impact on cranes and, in turn, on humans.
