LA CROSSE - A La Crosse
nonprofit hopes to send World War II veterans to
Washington, D.C., to visit war memorials.
Freedom Honor Flight
President Chuck Hanson says there's an urgency about the
trips because veterans are aging and soon may not be able
to make the journey.
His group will use private
donations to fly veterans to the nation's capitol.
Arthur Harebo of Holmen
hopes to be on the first Freedom Honor Flight from La
Crosse in October. The 83-year-old says the trip may
provide closure but it could also bring up painful
memories. He says, "so many of them suffered so
much."
The one-day trip is free
for World War II veterans living within a 120-mile radius
of La Crosse.
Organizers say they hope to
offer similar trips for other veterans.
