MADISON -
The state Assembly has approved a bill that would limit
phosphorus in residential dishwasher soap.
No more
than 0.5 percent phosphorus could be in dishwasher soap by
July 2010 under the bill. Twelve other states have similar
restrictions.
The
Democratic-controlled Assembly approved the measure 60-37
Friday. It now goes to the state Senate.
Environmental
groups support the restrictions because phosphorus runoff
can increase weed and algae growth in lakes and rivers.
Assembly
Republicans have questioned the need for the requirement
and whether soap with the lower phosphorus content would
be available by the time the restrictions take effect.
