Work on WIS 20/83 and Main St. Intersection in Racine County to begin

Sept. 19, 2014

On Monday, September 22nd, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will begin a $445,000 reconditioning project of the WIS 20/83 and Main Street Intersection in the village of Waterford, Racine County. The contractor, Zenith Tech, plans on completing the project in late fall.
Built in 1961, the current configuration of the intersection is problematic for large trucks and trailers to maneuver without entering opposing traffic. Also, large volumes of vehicles use the intersection in the mornings and afternoons which create congestion and unsafe conditions.
This project will:
  • Install traffic signals
  • Expand the SW corner radius to facilitate large truck movements
  • New sidewalks with updated pedestrian ramps/crossings
  • New curb and gutter
The Village of Waterford has had law enforcement helping coordinate traffic flows during peak commute times; this practice will continue through the life of the project. During construction, one lane of traffic will be open in each direction on all legs of the intersection. Temporary sidewalk will be used for pedestrian access to local businesses.
The WIS 20/83 and Main St. intersection is at a bridge crossing the Fox River which is the only bridge vehicles can use within three miles and is a gateway to the downtown Waterford area.
This intersection treatment is in advance to a larger reconstruction project of WIS 20/83 which is planned for 2018 or 2019, pending funding.
