Elizabeth J. Groen

Elizabeth Jane Ann (Hannagan) Groen of Boca Raton, Fla., and Mukwonago died Dec. 9, 2005, at home surrounded by family following a very brief and courageous battle with a malignant brain tumor.
Elizabeth was born July 14, 1926, in Oak Park, Ill. On May 29, 1947, she married the love her of life, Robert Groen, at St. Giles Catholic Church in Oak Park.
Her life has been filled with many wonderful moments, including times with her beloved husband, children and grandchildren. She had so many gifts and enjoyed so many things in her life. She was a wonderful artist, hostess, cook, baker and craftswoman. She enjoyed sailing, doll-making and needlepoint and was an avid traveler around the world with her beloved husband, Robert, and her family.
Surviving her is her husband of 58 years, their six children and 17 grandchildren: Robert Groen Jr. of Seattle (wife, Deborah; and children, Alison, Peter, Michael and Susanne); Jerome Groen of Gurnee, Ill. (wife, Karen; and daughter, Kelly); Darby (Groen) Kinni of Parkland, Fla. (husband, Jeff; and children, Jeffrey and Matthew); Emily (Groen) Katzenbach of Hoffman Estates, Ill. (husband, Michael; and children, Michael, Julia and Elizabeth); Elizabeth (Groen) Joly of Wonder Lake, Ill. (husband, John; and children, David, Brian, Kevin and Amanda); and Kerry (Groen) Stabell of Barre, Vt. (husband, Shawn; and children, Caitlin, Samantha and Zachary).
She also is survived by her beloved sisters, Mary Lou (Hannagan) Server, Dorothy (Hannagan) Gibson, Joanne (Hannagan) Rouse; brother, Tony Hannagan; sister and brother-in-law, Marion (Groen) Standfield and Robert Standfield; 45 nieces and nephews; and 98 great-nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Alice (Ryan) Hannagan; father, Anthony Hannagan; uncle, Jerry Hannagan; sister, Katherine (Hannagan) Shannon; brother, Thomas Hannagan; and sister, Alice (Hannagan) Reese.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 15, at St. Giles Catholic Church, 1025 Columbian Ave., Oak Park. Following the mass, interment will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1400 S. Wolf Road, Hillside , Ill.
Visitation will be held at Petersenís Funeral Home, 6938 W. North Ave., Chicago, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14, and at 9 a.m. Dec. 15 prior to the procession to the church.
In lieu of flowers, Elizabeth has requested that donations be made to a very special Catholic priest on the island of Dominica, who leads three impoverished parishes and to whom she has felt very connected over the past 20 years.
