Matthew Ronald Kading

Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Ronald Kading, 32, passed away Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, from injuries sustained in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He was born July 25, 1973, in Fayetteville, N.C., to Ronald and Karla (Knutsen) Kading. Matt graduated from Madison East High School with the Class of 1991.

He served in the U.S. Army for 14 years, eight years were active duty. Matt was very proud of his military career and serving his country. He understood the risks involved and felt strongly about his service. Matt received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Combat Action Badge and many other medals. He worked for Westphal as an apprentice electrician, and was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union No. 159. Matt enjoyed baseball, collecting baseball cards and bowling. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a big-hearted man, who liked to have fun and always put others before himself.

Matt is survived by his parents, Ron and Karla Kading of Madison; his sister, Melissa "Missie" Kading (Jay Umhoefer) of Madison; fiancee Lindsay Sayles of Genesee Depot; maternal grandparents Ivan and Ruby Knutsen of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and many special aunts, uncles, cousins and many great friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Earle and Dorothy Kading, and a cousin, Sean Peterson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at Gunderson East Funeral Home, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for a trust fund to be established for the Powless House, affiliated with the Burn Center.
