Gilbert ‘Gil’ A. Hanke Sr.

Gilbert "Gil" A. Hanke Sr., 85, of Helenville, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, surrounded by his family at Countryside Home in Jefferson due to complications of Alzheimer’s.

He was born in Milwaukee on Sept. 25, 1920, the son of Charles and Rose (Kranz) Hanke. He married Gladys I. Steinle on Oct. 7, 1944, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Gil served in the Navy Medical Corps during World War II. He worked for Cooper Industries in Waukesha for many years and was a 21-year member of the American Legion Post 318 in Lake Tomahawk. Gil loved hunting and fishing, and spending time with his family was a priority to him.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; one son, Gilbert Jr. of Vesper; one daughter, Sharon (Dennis) Stair of Sullivan; one granddaughter, Valerie Hanke of Dallas; two grandsons, Steven (Jenny) Hanke of Greenfield and Dennis (Christy) Stair Jr. of Sullivan; four great-grandchildren, Austin Smith, Kristin Stair, Allison Stair and Madison Hanke; three sisters and three brothers, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Olsen Funeral Home, 221 S. Center Ave., Jefferson. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in the Bakertown Baptist Cemetery.
