HAMILTON HILL, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Peter Brooks Brandt

Oct. 29, 1945 - Oct. 23, 2005

Peter Brooks Brandt of Hamilton Hill, Western Australia, formerly of Pewaukee, died at his home in the Pinakarri Cooperative Community on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005. During his final illness, he was lovingly attended by his children, Shannon and Clifton, his former wife, Barbara Temperton, and members of the Pinakarri community.

Peter was born in Waukesha on Oct. 29, 1945. He spent his early years on the family dairy farm and at the family home in Pewaukee. After graduating from Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha, he attended the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee. In 1968 Peterís love of adventure brought him to Australia where he eventually settled. In 1974 he married Barbara Temperton in Wittenoom, W.A. They later divorced.

Peterís love of the outdoors led him to employment that involved overseeing natural resources, horticulture and eventually intense study and involvement in permaculture. In the mid-1990s he traveled to Kashmir and India to assist the local population and members of Buddhist monasteries in learning ecologically sound growing techniques and permaculture farming. When diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, he was enroute to Kashmir and India to teach homebuilding methods using compacted hay to lessen costs and deaths in this earthquake-prone area.

Peterís interests were far-ranging and included music, gardening, poetry writing under the name "Thunderheart," lawn bowling and travel. During his life he maintained dual citizenship. He was a member of St. Paulís Anglican Church and the Pinakarri Cooperative Community.

Survivors include his daughter, Shannon Brandt, and son, Clifton Brandt, both of Hamilton Hill, W.A., and his former wife, Barbara Temperton of Albany, W.A. Other surviving family members are his sibling, Dennis Brandt (Donna) of Gotham, Francis Brandt (Mary Ann) of Mankato, Minn., Genevieve Brandt Kirchman of Portage, Paul Brandt (Ramona) of Calgary, Canada, Mary Beth Brandt (Meng Kong Tham) of Chicago, Philomena Brandt Sucharda (Terry) of Racine, Gerard Brandt (Susan) of Fond du Lac, Joseph Brandt and partner Ginny Manning of Lansing, Iowa; 10 nieces; eight nephews; five great-nieces; and three great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mervin L. and Mary (Gibbons) Brandt.

Peterís gentle spirit, helpfulness and enthusiasm will be greatly missed by family and friends. His favorite sayings, "everything is perfect" and "have a great day in paradise," leave behind a lesson for us all.

Funeral services followed by a morning tea were held at St Paulís Anglican Church in Beaconsfield, W.A., on Wednesday, Oct. 26. A private family ceremony of remembrance will be held in Portage on Nov. 26.

Messages of sympathy and memorials may be sent to Brandt Family, 401 State St., Mankato, MN 56001. They will be forwarded to Peterís children in Australia.
