Dr. Donald J. Mielke

Oct. 11,1939 - July 29, 2006

Dr. Donald J. Mielke, 66, of Delafield, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2006, at home.

A lover of nature and wildlife, he enjoyed gatherings of friends and family and was dedicated to the patients in his care. Throughout his life, Don did things his way. He followed that philosophy through the many months of his illness - continuing to see patients and taking in the world around him.

He was born Oct. 11, 1939, in Ironwood, Mich., to Julia A. (nee Sopko) and Erven J. Mielke. He was the beloved husband of Karen (nee Posta); father of Mary J. (fiance Edward Aprahamian) of Brookfield, Shawn (Ann) and Marc of Waimea, Hawaii; grandfather of Samantha and Collin of San Jose, Calif.; stepfather of Kim (Skryd) Van Gorder of Ferndale, Mich.; and brother of Patricia A. (Jerry) Walter of Grand Haven, Mich., and Dr. Robert Mielke of Kirksville, Mo. He is also survived by a niece and a nephew in Michigan, other relatives and friends.

After graduating from Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Ill., he received a bachelor of arts at Marquette University. Dr. Mielke earned his medical degree at Marquette University College of Medicine and took his residency in dermatology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served his country from 1965 to 1969 in the U.S. Air Force as a flight surgeon for the Air Force Thunderbird precision flying team. He also served in the Air National Guard 128th Air Refueling Wing at Mitchell Field retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

Dr. Mielke started his dermatology practice in Waukesha in the early 1970s and maintained that practice until early this year. Over the years, he helped many patients maintain a better quality of life. This year, he was awarded an honorarium for his support of AngelsGrace Hospice.

After living for many years in Brookfield, he moved a decade ago to Delafield where he enjoyed the outside world of birds and flowers as well as the koi in his pond. His favorite dogs, Max, Mia and Jake, were a large part of his relaxing hours.

Dr. Mielke had chosen to be cremated with no formal services.

Memorials in Dr. Mielke’s name to AnglesGrace Hospice, W358-N7430 Brown St., Oconomowoc, WI 53066, would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Yonke and Son Funeral Home, 691-1900, is serving the family.
