Helen Mary (nee Billy) Janis, 92, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, in Sacramento, Calif., where she resided for the past eight years. She had been in poor health since suffering a stroke in January.

Helen was born Jan. 8, 1914, in Lynn. She moved to Milwaukee at age 18 and later married John Janis of Milwaukee, to whom she was married for 56 years. Helen worked in war-related industries during World War II while John served in the South Pacific.

John and Helen built their first home in Milwaukee in 1947 and their second home in Waukesha in 1973. During retirement, Helen spent countless hours volunteering for the senior lunch program. In California, she knitted numerous items for the Assistance League.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Helen (C. Breck); granddaughter, Debbie; grandson, Mark; and other relatives and friends.

Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7301 W. Nash St., Milwaukee. Viewing will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in the mausoleum atrium, followed by a noon interment service.
