Rev. Louis S. Okopinski, Cistercian Oblate

The Rev. Louis S. Okopinski of Milwaukee died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, at Ruth Hospice in Milwaukee at age 92. Father Okopinski began his studies in 1940 at the Salvatorian Seminary, St. Nazianz, Wisconsin, completing his priesthood formation at Saint Francis Major Seminary, 1945-1951. He was ordained a Catholic priest May 26, 1951, in Milwaukee, by the Most Rev. Moses E. Kiley at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. He was a Cistercian Oblate and a member of the Schoenstatt Diocesan Priests.

Father Okopinskiís priestly ministry began June 27, 1951, as an assistant at Holy Apostles Parish, New Berlin. His next assistant positions were served at St. Hyacinth Parish (June 1, 1955), Sisters Cyril & Methodius (May 10, 1962) and St. Ignatius Parish (July 12, 1962), all in Milwaukee. Father Okopinski was appointed chaplain for the Waukesha area hospitals on Oct. 7, 1969, serving in this capacity until his retirement from active ministry Dec. 31, 1992.

Father Okopinski is survived by nieces, nephews and many other friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Father Okopinskiís Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at St. William Catholic Church, 440 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha, with Archbishop Timothy Dolan officiating. A visitation will be held from noon until the time of services at the church Wednesday. Burial will be held at Our Lady of Spring Bank Cemetery in Sparta on Thursday, Dec. 14.

Memorial donations would be appreciated to the Salvatorian Seminary in Africa.
