Leah Marie (nee Flanagan) Koehler

Leah Marie (nee Flanagan) Koehler, 92, a longtime Waukesha resident, went to be with her beloved Arnold on Monday, Feb. 20, 2006. She was born May 18, 1913, in Oconomowoc, to Frank and Bessie (nee Bertelson) Flanagan.
Leah Marie graduated from Oconomowoc High School in 1930 and from Racine-Kenosha Rural Normal School in 1933. After graduation, she taught in a rural one room school house on Highway 67, north of Oconomowoc. Her grandmother, Mrs. Abbie (Bolson) Bertelson and her mother, Bessie, taught at the same school years before. On Aug. 12, 1937, she married Arnold Koehler. He preceded her in death Friday, April 29, 1994. Leah Marie was a charter member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. For more than 30 years she visited nursing homes with her husband on behalf of St. Mary’s - St. Vincent De Paul Society and she continued her visits until the time of her death. Mrs. Koehler was a member of the St. Mary’s Christian Mothers, St. Vincent De Paul Society and the Waukesha County Historical Society. She lived in her home at 316 Frame Ave. for almost 60 years and moved to Oak Hill Village on Jan. 31, 1998.
She was a loving mother to Kathleen Koehler of West Allis, Joanne (Mike) Riordan of Waukesha, Patricia (John) Bacon of Waukesha, Dan (Mary) Koehler of Saylesville, John (Loie) Koehler of North Prairie and Margaret (Mike) Wenzel of Milwaukee. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph (Mabel) Flanagan of Oconomowoc; three sisters, June (the late Gerald) Goard of Anchorage, Alaska, Helen (O.K.) Blackmore of Beaverton, Ore., and Therese (Ed) McCabe of Waukesha; one sister-in-law, Lou Flanagan of Kentucky; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, including those at Oak Hill Village, also survive. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Daniel Bacon; three sisters, Margaret Flanagan, Ida Mae Janowak and Sister De Sales Flanagan; three brothers, the Rev. Francis Flanagan, C.S.S.R., Charles Flanagan and Don Flanagan; her stepmother, Mae Amundson Flanagan; stepbrother, Harold Amundson; and stepsister, Irene Smith.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 225 S. Hartwell Ave., with a funeral Mass at 7 p.m. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Please meet at the cemetery office.
