Mary Margaret Rutenber

Mary Margaret Rutenber, 99, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at her Avalon Square Home. She was born in Clintonville on March 5, 1906, to Llewellyn and Florence (nee Larson) Cole. She graduated from the Milwaukee-Downer College (Lawrence University). Following graduation, she became an assistant for the college president. On Sept. 12, 1931, she married Ellwood "Rutie" Rutenber in Clintonville. He preceded her in death March 13, 1976.
Mary was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Waukesha, where she was a circle leader, Sunday school teacher and superintendent. She was a devoted Cub Scout den mother. She enjoyed birding all over the world with her husband, Rutie, and participating in the yearly Audubon Society bird count with the Benjamin F. Goss Bird Club.
Mary was a member of the Waukesha Service Club and she was an ardent gardener. Volunteering was a prominent part of Mary’s life. She was a volunteer at the Waukesha County Hospital, serving on the board of directors, and she volunteered at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
She was a loving mother to James (Constance) Rutenber of Farragut, Tenn., and Thomas (Karen) Rutenber of Arlington Heights, Ill.; a cherished grandmother to Ann (Robert) Konrad, Heather Rutenber and Karen (Samuel) Alderman III; and great-grandmother to Timothy Konrad, Robyn Konrad and Ella Cole Alderman with one more on the way. Other relatives and friends also survive.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Dr. Llewellyn, Robert, Samuel and Ivan Cole.
A memorial service for Mrs. Rutenber will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Avalon Square Chapel, 222 Park Place, Waukesha. A gathering for family and guests with light refreshments will follow the service. A private family burial is planned at Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah.
