Dorothy G. Smith
Jan. 17, 1909 - July 8, 2006
Dorothy Genevieve Smith, 97, of Oconomowoc, died Saturday, July, 8, 2006, at her home.
She was born Jan. 17, 1909, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Charles E. and Hilda (nee Wussow) Smith.
In elementary and high school, respectively, she attended 21st Street School and Washington High School, and she later graduated with a degree in art education at State Teachers College, now the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. With that degree, she began teaching at Lincoln Jr. High School in Kenosha, but in 1945 left the job to help keep her family together after her fatherís death. From 1945 to 1960, she taught art at Steuben Jr. High School and started the art department in the newly built John Marshall High School. She retired to her studio and home on Lower Nashotah Lake.
After one year of rest during retirement, she agreed to teach art to five of her neighboring buddies in the studio. That class grew in size to 40 over the years, and the classes increased to four sessions a week. The painters participated in an excellent annual show, and paintings were shown in New York, Milwaukee, Michigan and Oconomowoc, as well as many private homes, hospitals and banks.
She is survived by many friends.
Preceding her in death are her parents and her sisters, Ruth Smith and Evelyn Andersen.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 11 at St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church, W359-N8512 Brown St., Oconomowoc. The Rev. David A. Verhasselt will officiate. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial is at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee. Memorials can be made to a charity of oneís choice.
