Walter ‘Wally’ V. Fleischmann

Sept. 15, 1930 - July 21, 2006

Walter "Wally" V. Fleischmann of Waukesha died suddenly Friday, July 21, 2006, at his home at age 75. He was born Sept. 15, 1930, in Sussex, the son of Arnold and Rosella (nee Daley) Fleischmann. Wally’s parents died at an early age, and he was raised by his grandparents on their farm in Sussex.

Wally honorably served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. During that time, he frequently corresponded with his future wife, Catharine Frank. Wally married Catharine on Nov. 6, 1954, and they shared 42 years of marriage together. He was a trustee for the Catholic Knights, Branch 40, for many years. Wally was an original founding member of St. William Catholic Church. He also served four terms as a Waukesha alderman.

Wally was an avid sports fan and regularly officiated for basketball, football and baseball games in both the Waukesha area and the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association. He proudly taught his three grandsons to umpire as well. He retired in 1995 from Alloy Products, having worked there for more than 40 years. In his retirement, Wally supervised the William Oliver Youth Complex. He was one of Santa’s very special helpers every year during the holiday season. Wally also worked at McDonald’s in his free time. He loved his family very much, especially his grandchildren. Wally never missed a moment to spend time with them and most certainly never missed any of their sporting events or school activities. He was their token chauffeur and favorite baby sitter. Wally’s grandchildren fondly referred to him as "Du." He was proud of his family and everything they did.

Wally will be sadly missed by his son, Steve (Debi) Fleischmann of Waukesha; daughter, Ann Fleischmann of Waukesha; four grandchildren, Andy, Jake, Chris and Megan; three brothers, Paul (Marion), Francis (Jo) and Harold (Ellie) Fleischmann; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Hartling; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Catharine; and two sisters, Dolores Kuhr and Rita Meyer.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until a 7:30 p.m. vigil service Wednesday, July 26, at Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 237 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha. Visitation continues from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass on Thursday, July 27, at St. William Catholic Church, 440 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha, with the Rev. Donald Quartana officiating. Burial will take place immediately following the Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.

The family has requested that memorial donations be made to St. William Catholic Church.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Waukesha Memorial Hospital for the understanding care and concern. "Everyone knew Wally."
