Philip ‘Phil’ Gehring

Philip "Phil" Gehring, 84, of Phillips, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Phillips, the son of George and Sophie (nee Schleicher) Gehring.

Phil spent his childhood and schooling in Phillips, attending and graduating from Phillips High School in 1939. He was married to Donna Huebner on Sept. 5, 1953, in Waukesha.

Phil was employed as a logger on his family’s dairy farm, at Wern Farms in Milwaukee and then at the Golden Guernsey Dairy Farm. In 1971, he and his wife were the owners and operators of Phil and Donna’s Bar in the town of Elk until 1987. He also was employed as a bus driver for the Phillips School District. He was an avid member of the National Rifle Association, a founder of the Elk River pioneers snowmobile club, and was Elk town supervisor and fire warden for many years. In his free time, he was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting whitetail deer with his three daughters.

Surviving are his daughters, Connie (Phil) Sierlecki of Johnson Creek, Kim Skomaroske of Phillips and Colleen Gehring of Jefferson; his four grandsons, Daniel (Amanda) and Samuel Martin, Kenneth Stork III and Nicholas Skomaroske; great-grandson, Jeremiah Martin; and twin sisters, Margie Miller of Milwaukee and Mae Hoffer of Lincoln, Neb. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents and his wife, Donna, on Oct. 13, 2005.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 3, at Heindl Funeral Home, Phillips, with Laddie Holoubek officiating. Friends may call after 4:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home until the hour of the service. Internment will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in the spring.
