Iola ‘Vi’ Hackel

Iola "Vi" Hackel, 96, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, in Waukesha.
Vi was born Aug. 18, 1909, in Eastman, the daughter of John and Nancy Young.
As a child, her family moved to Kit Carson, Colo., where they bought a ranch. The family next moved to Saskatchewan, Canada, and then to Minnesota before settling in Wisconsin for the rest of her adult life.
Vi and her husband, Carl Hackel, who preceded her in death in 1990, were the owners and operators of the Riverside Trailer Park in Janesville for 25 years prior to their retirement at Puckaway Lake in Montello, where they spent time fishing, hunting and spending time with family. During their retirement, they enjoyed a large mobile home on their lake property. The couple were great travelers, having visited every state except for Alaska.
Vi was a lifetime member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waukesha and was an active leader in the Brownies and Cub Scouts for many years. She had worked at Waukesha Springs Bottling Co., Mastercraft Leather Goods Co. and as a bus driver for Jelco School Bus for 20 years in the Waukesha/Pewaukee area. She was a recipient of four pins from the Wisconsin Motor Vehicles Department in honor of her safety and driving skills.
Vi is deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her children, Donald John (Doris) Hackel of Waukesha and Darlene Nancy (Milton) Cunningham of Waukesha; her loving grandchildren, David (Megan) and Dawn Hackel of Waukesha, Crystal (Damon) Whitaker of Trenton, Miss., and Cory Cunningham of Waukesha; and five foster children whom Vi and Carl cared for over the years. Further surviving are her sisters, Dorothy Wenzel of Stratford and Alice Rindt of Stetsonville, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Elvie Young, Emma Lou Young, Ruby Caldwell, Wanda Green, Mildred Jaunig and Edith Cannon; and brothers, Porter Young and Donald Young.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Church and Chapel Funeral Home, 380 Bluemound Road, Waukesha. Friends may call Friday from 5 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at Highland Memorial Park in New Berlin.
