Norman E. Merz

June 27, 1909 - May 20, 2006

Norman E. Merz of Elm Grove died Saturday, May 20, 2006, at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital at age 96. Norm was born June 27, 1909, in Milwaukee, the son of Edward and Helen (nee Schumacher) Merz Jr.

He was united in marriage to Erna AmEnd. She preceded him in death in 1995 after 61 years of marriage. Norm was the oldest member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Waukesha, where he was also the original greeter. Norm was employed as a Linotype operator from 1928 until the 1970s, retiring from Independent Typesetting Co. In his retirement, Norm worked at Mr. Print for 25 years until 1998 at age 89. In the years that followed, he stayed active in the church with phone ministry and grounds keeping. Norm had a great love for his family, which came through in his face and his voice every time he spoke of them.

Norm will be sadly missed by his daughter, Sandra (Charles) Stollenwerk of Wauwatosa; grandchildren, Richard N. (Wendy) Merz II of Plymouth, Anthony Merz of Alaska, Charles (Marita Dunn) Stollenwerk of Austin, Texas, Wayne (Mary Daley) Stollenwerk of Wauwatosa and Joseph (Mindy) Stollenwerk of Milwaukee; great-grandchildren, Heather (Mike) Lescher and Richard N. Merz III; one great-great-grandson, Lukas Lescher; and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Zippy Merz of Florida and Margaret Peggy Merz of Waukesha. Norm is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Erna; and his son, Richard, in 2003.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until the 7 p.m. funeral service Wednesday, May 24, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1415 Dopp St., Waukesha, with the Rev. Frank Janzow officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 25, at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to Ascension Properties Fund, 1415 Dopp St., Waukesha, WI 53188.
