Robert "Rob" D. Goerke
May 9, 1947 - Nov. 3, 2006
Robert "Rob" D. Goerke of Waukesha found peace Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, after losing a courageous battle with lung cancer at the age of 59.
He was born May 9, 1947, in Waukesha to Donald and Joan (nee Podnar) Goerke. Rob attended Waukesha South High School and graduated in 1966. He later joined the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country in Vietnam. Upon his return from the Air Force, Rob earned his pilot’s license from Waukesha Flying Service. Rob attended WCTC and graduated with an engineering degree in 1974.
He began his career with Allen Bradley (Rockwell Automation) in May 1974. Rob married Cheryl L. Berger on June 22, 1974, and they were able to share 32 years together. He was a nature lover and enjoyed being outdoors, camping, fishing and hunting. Rob’s true love was vegetable gardening, and every fall he canned the produce that he grew in his garden. He had a wonderful sense of humor and tried to remain positive even in extreme circumstances.
During his illness, he remained positive and used his sense of humor to encourage all of us. Rob tried not to complain and was a true soldier battling his illness. His strong faith never failed and got him through the most difficult of times. Rob had a very strong work ethic. He devoted his talents to Rockwell Automation for more than 32 years. Rob was able to fix anything and took great pride in his abilities.
Rob will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Cheryl, devoted daughters, Erin N. (Philip) Peters, both of Waukesha, and Sarah A Goerke of Madison. He is further survived by his sister, Barbara A. Lacey of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother, Lesley J. Goerke of Waukesha; nieces, other family, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald in 2001 and Joan in June 2006, and brother, John D. Goerke, in 1967.
A Mass for Rob will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 822 N. East Ave., Waukesha, on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at 11 a.m., with Father William Key officiating. A visitation will be held at Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 237 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha, on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. There will be a second visitation at the funeral home Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. procession to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. A private burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, N19-W24350 Riverwood Drive, Waukesha, WI 53188; Rolland Nelson Crossroads Hospice, 1020 James Drive, Suite E, Hartland, WI 53029; or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (address above).
