"Coach" Mike Johnson, 76, of Okauchee, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006. Mike was born May 26, 1930, in Wisconsin Rapids, the son of Ward and Ruth (nee Chase) Johnson.
He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948. Mike married the love of his life, Joan Laramie, on July 5, 1952, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids. In 1958, he received his undergraduate degree in physical education, health and coaching from the University of Colorado. He was a member of the CU ski jumping team from 1954 to 1958.
Mike retired from the Oconomowoc School District after 25 years. He enjoyed coaching basketball and football. Mike spent many happy winters with his wife, Joan, in Tuscon, Ariz., and his summers on Okauchee Lake. He had many passions in life, including golfing, softball, hunting, skiing, teaching, coaching and his family. Mike was very active in the Tuscon Elks Club.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan; his brother, Frank of Wisconsin Rapids; his sister-in-law, Arnita Johnson of Wisconsin Rapids; brother-in-law, James (Sue) Laramie of Sanibel Island, Fla.; and his children, Pat Johnson of Okauchee, Susie (Hugh) Gnatzig of Whitewater, Cindy (Curtis) Laramie of Colorado and Shelly Judkins of Hartland. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Danny and Gina Gnatzig and Preston and Raechal Judkins.
He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel, and his brother, Robert.
Visitation is from 3 p.m. until the 5 p.m. funeral service Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Pagenkopf Funeral Home, 1165 Summit Ave., Oconomowoc.
