Richard C. Garvens

Richard C. Garvens, 92, of Waukesha, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at Virginia Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Jan. 24, 1914, in the town of Genesee, to Enos and Mabel (nee Torhorst) Garvens.

On Feb. 24, 1940, he married the former Edith Varley. She preceded him in death Nov. 20, 1999. He started out in life as a farmer. For many years he custom-ground feed for many area farms. He then worked for the Wisconsin State Hatchery and also for Waldschmidt and Sons, where he retired after 26 years.

He is survived by his children, Howard (Sharon) Garvens of Waukesha and Janet (John) Pingel of New Auburn; grandchildren, Sarah (Brian) Groskreutz, Stephanie (Mike) Adrihan, Shannon (fiance Ben Neeser) Pingel, Shawn Pingel and Shelly Pingel; brothers, Ralph (the late Leona) Garvens of Waukesha and Robert (the late Lorraine) Garvens of East Troy; and a sister-in-law, Edith Garvens of East Troy. Other relatives and friends also survive. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Esther; brothers, Alfred and Harvey; and his daughter, Shirley Carstensen. Visitation for Richard will be held from 10:30 a.m. until the noon funeral service Friday, Sept. 8, at First United Methodist Church, 121 Wisconsin Ave., Waukesha. Burial will follow the service at Prairie Home Cemetery.
