Richard E. Burd

Richard Everett Burd, 79, of Phoenix and formerly of Marion, N.D., died Monday, April 16, 2007, in the Sherman Home of Hospice on The Valley in Phoenix. Richard was born Sept. 9, 1927, in Monango, N.D., the son of Harry and Emma (Madche) Burd.

Richard grew up in Valley City, N.D., and graduated from Valley City High School. On March 29, 1947, he married the former Elda Spoerl of Marion. Richard began his employment with the Soo Line Railroad in 1950 and worked in Valley City and Minot, N.D., until his appointment as an agent in Milwaukee in 1963. In November 1977, he was named as terminal manager at Superior, but after a heart attack in 1978, he returned to Milwaukee as terminal manager. Richard continued in that position until his retirement from the Soo Line Railroad in September 1982.

Richard and Elda moved to Tucson, Ariz., where he formed Burd Bingo, a bingo supply corporation. He sold that in 1990. Richard and Elda continued to spend their winters in Tucson and their summers in Marion. Elda died Jan. 4, 1995. Richard married Adrienne Luger on Nov. 1, 1996.

Richard is survived by his wife, Adrienne of Phoenix; three sons, Keith (Livvy) Burd of Baltimore, Md., Richard Burd of San Francisco and Steve (Christine) Burd of Alamo, Calif.; one sister, Esther Hanson of Aurora, Colo.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, one brother and one sister.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today, April 18, at the Lerud-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, 515 Central Ave. North, Valley City, with the Rev. Keith Burd officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Marion.
