Joseph E. ‘Joe’ Schmidt

June 18, 1937 - Aug. 7, 2007

Joseph E. "Joe" Schmidt, a lifelong resident of Waukesha, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, at age 70 at his residence, following a long battle with brain cancer. Joe was born June 18, 1937, the son of Valerian and Dorothy (nee Eckrich).

Joe and Kay (nee Kraft) were married June 13, 1967, and he was her beloved husband of 40 years. Joe served his country in the Air Force for four years. Joe was an employee of the ACME Supply Co. for 35 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and a master of the grill. He enjoyed reading, relaxing and a good laugh with his family and friends. Red Green would be proud of the amount of duck tape he used.

Joe is survived by his four children, Charlie (Julie) of Lake Mills, Pat (Deanna) of Sussex, Greta (Scott) of Hartford and Andy of Waukesha. Joe is further survived by his brother, Robert of Waukesha; sister, Judy of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren, Hailey, Heather, Briana, Curtis, Grace, Adam and Owen. Joe was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerard and Chuck, and by his parents.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral Mass on Saturday, Aug. 11, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 822 N. East Ave., Waukesha. The Rev. William Key will be officiating.

Masses in Joe’s name may be directed to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 822 N. East Ave., Waukesha, WI 53188. Joe was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church 70 years ago.

Joe’s family would like to express a special appreciation to all those involved in caring for him over the years, including St. Luke’s neuro-intensive care unit nursing staff, the Rolland Nelson Crossroads Hospice nurses and certified nursing assistants, and all of the volunteers who made it possible for him to enjoy the end of his life in the comfort of his own home.
