Marion Marks

Marion Virginia Marks, 85, of Manhattan, Kan., died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at Meadowlark Hills Lyle House. She was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Apple River, Ill., the daughter of Floyd W. and Caroline L. (nee Frei) Dunbar.

In 1939, she graduated from Waukesha High School. Marion was a beautician from 1939 to 1941 and then joined the Women’s Army Corps from 1941 to 1944, serving in World War II. She later was a bookkeeper for a tax preparation business and assisted in running the family bowling lanes and grocery stores in Oconomowoc and Waukesha from 1951 to 1967.

She was a member of the Oconomowoc Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge. Marion was an avid golfer and had two holes in one and was an avid bowler, inducted as a member of the Oconomowoc Hall of Fame. She was a member of the River Green Golf Course at Avon Park, Fla., for 30 years until 2003, and she and her husband John had many memorable moments there.

She married John Joseph Connaughton in 1944 and they later divorced in 1950. She later married W. John Marks in Oconomowoc in 1969, and he preceded her in death in 1986. The couple spent half of the year in Florida and the other half in Wisconsin during these 17 wonderful years.

Survivors include one son, Jack (Georgeann) Connaughton of Manhattan; one granddaughter, Stacey (fiance John Sherman) Connaughton of West Lafayette, Ind.; and four stepdaughters, Judy, Joyce, Janet and JoAnn.

Cremation is planned with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, at Good Shepherd Methodist Church, 209 W. Wisconsin Ave., Oconomowoc, with the Rev. Greg Schrimpf officiating. Inurnment will be in the Glenview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Ixonia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or Homecare & Hospice Inc., Manhattan.
