Joseph T. Prokup

Joseph T. Prokup, 85, of Spring Valley, Ill., died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at his home after a six-month illness. Joseph was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Spring Valley, the son of Joseph F. and Antionette (nee Cizma) Prokup.

Joseph married Gloria Cabodi on June 25, 1949, in Spring Valley. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Italy and Africa. He was the owner and operator of Joe’s Texaco in Spring Valley for eight years, then worked for Harper-Wyman in Princeton, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Spring Valley, where he was an usher and served as an acolyte for funeral Mass. Joseph also was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as past post commander of Spring Valley Piercy-Ward Post 3666. He also was a past commander of the Bureau City Council.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Spring Valley; four children, Mary Kay (Dick) Hanson of Waukesha, Joseph A. (Michele) Prokup of Spring Valley, Patricia (Jack) Boroski of Spring Valley and Robert (Diane) Prokup of Spring Valley; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Eleanor Schmitz.

Visitation will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 15, at Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will take place at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Barto Funeral Home with a funeral Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at 10 a.m. The Rev. Paul Meismer will be officiating.

Entombment will be at Valley Memorial Park, Spring Valley.
