Marion Bernice Bartlett Splett

June 29, 1912 - Jan. 14, 2008

Marion Bernice Bartlett Splett, 95, a native of Pewaukee, passed from our midst to her heavenly home Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, in Bremerton, Wash.

Marion was a descendent of Charles and Abigail Bartlett, who came to Pewaukee in 1852. Their farm was known as the Portland Farm. Later it was known as the Bartlett Farm under the ownership of George and Owen Bartlett, the couple’s grandsons.

Marion was born June 29, 1912, to Harvey and Alma Hansen Bartlett, whose farm was adjacent to the property originally purchased by Charles. Their house is now privately owned, but the original farm acreage has been developed.

Charles’ son, Smith, the father of Harvey, George and Owen, was once a bookkeeper at the old Zaun Hotel in Pewaukee.

Marion graduated from Pewaukee High School in 1930. After graduation, she worked at the Pewaukee Telephone Exchange, as had her mother and aunts before her.

In 1932, Marion married Albert J. Splett, also of rural Pewaukee. In 1938, they built their home along old Highway 19, later Highway 16 and now Bluemound Road, on land that had once been part of the old Pfeffer Nursery.

In 1952, the family left Pewaukee and moved to Wenatchee, Wash.

As a lifelong Christian, Marion was a dedicated homemaker who served her Lord and her family with love, patience and pride. She never forgot to mail a birthday card and was the family designated "cake baker" for family events. She made perfect angel food cakes (before they came in a box). She loved animals and all things growing. Among her favorite memories were times gathering wildflowers in a certain area of the original Bartlett property, especially violets.

Marion is survived by her seven children, Eileen Splett Hendrickson of Bremerton, Leon Splett (Annabelle) of Rock Springs, Wyo., Richard Splett of Quinton, N.J., Dennis Splett (Mary Lou) of Bremerton, David Splett (Bonnie) of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., James Splett of Glendale, Ariz., and Dale Splett (Gail) of Richard, Wash. She is also survived by her brothers, Lawrence Bartlett of Pewaukee and Dean Bartlett of Hartland. Marion had 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and three sisters-in-law.
