John A. Horn

April 22, 1920 - Feb. 21, 2008

John A. Horn of Mukwonago passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at LindenGrove in Mukwonago. He was 87. John was born in Mukwonago on April 22, 1920, the son of William and Kathryn (nee Kunz) Horn.

After graduating from Mukwonago High School, he received a degree in agricultural engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

John loved to help people at his business, the former Horn, Stoecker and Horn Hardware Store in Mukwonago. Everyone came to the store to see "Big John" in his bib overalls. He also loved to volunteer for conservation projects, such as helping the Department of Natural Resources stock lakes with fish. In his spare time, John loved to hunt, fish and make duck decoys.

John was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of American Legion Post #375 of Mukwonago, a member of Ducks Unlimited and a former Mukwonago School Board member for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lola (nee Shaw); his children, Deborah (Ernest) Witzke of Fort Atkinson, Brenda (Rodney) Baker of Toledo, Ohio, and Janette (Jeffrey) Rolfe of Mukwonago; a brother, James (Willeen) Horn of Corpus Christi, Texas; a sister, Barbara (Max) Krumrey of Pontiac, Mich.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Margaret Barber and Mary Ann Hardaker.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until the 7 p.m. memorial service Monday, Feb. 25, at Schmidt & Bartelt-Van Valin Funeral Home, 315 Main St. (Highway ES), Mukwonago. The service will be conducted by American Legion Post #375, followed by Deacon Greg Price.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Mukwonago Fire Department or to the charity of your choice are appreciated.
