Joseph ‘Joe’ D. Long

March 19, 1933 - July 17, 2008

Joseph "Joe" D. Long passed away at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau on Thursday, July 17, 2008. He was born in Brookfield, the youngest of 10 children born to Charles and Mabel (nee Hunter).

He lived in Brookfield until moving to Waukesha after graduating from Waukesha High School in 1951. In 1952, he started a machinist apprenticeship at Kearney & Trecker Corp. in West Allis. He married Jean Connelly, his wife of 54 years, in 1954 at the First

Baptist Church in Waukesha. He worked for Kearney & Trecker Corp. in West Allis for 33 years, many years as a supervisor. He left K&T when he and his wife purchased the Algiers Motel on Bluemound Road in Brookfield. In 1988, they moved to the North Woods, settling in Arbor Vitae. After retirement, Joe volunteered to work on the groomers for the Cross Country Cruiser Snowmobile Club. He also worked part time at Ace Hardware in Woodruff. He enjoyed being around people and particularly helping them with their hardware needs.

He loved working on small engines. He enjoyed recycling things that others would throw away. Joe had boundless energy and was always making new friends.

He is survived by his wife and three children, Calvin (Nancy) Long of Muskego, Kerry-Jo (David) Johnson of Oulu and Kent Long of Woodruff. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Khara, Kelsey, Josiah, Zachary and Owen. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews and great- and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sisters, Charles (Charlie), Gladys Faulkner, Alice Ritt, Dorothy Burgess, Marion Stoll, Margaret Long, Katherine Barfknecht, Elda Jean Ferris, William (Bill) and Adam; and an infant grandchild.

Visitation will be held from noon until the 3 p.m. funeral service Saturday, July 26, at Bolger Funeral and Cremation Services-Woodruff Chapel in Woodruff. Private family graveside services will be held on Monday, July 28, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Arbor Vitae.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Heart Association would be appreciated.
