Mary McCoy Kamps

Mary McCoy Kamps passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008, in McLean, Va., at age 98.

Mrs. Kamps was a longtime resident of Waukesha, her family having settled in the area in the late 1800s. Her family became prominent retailers and once owned a number of major stores in Waukesha. Through the work of her grandparents, George and Mary Ann Tassell, her parents, Jane and Michael McCoy, and her late husband, Howard Kamps, the family business spread to include the Enterprise, McCoy’s Department Store, The Style Shop, The Colonial Shop and a number of other department stores throughout the Midwest under the name of Johnson and Hills.

Mrs. Kamps moved to McLean in 1997 to live with her daughter. She will be remembered for her lifelong willingness to help others, her good-natured sense of humor, her pride in her Waukesha roots and her enjoyment of a good game of gin rummy.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Strauss of McLean; her son, Michael J. Kamps of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at St. Anthony on the Lake, N2101 Prospect Ave., town of Delafield (Highway SS). A reception after the Mass will be held in a nearby home. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County would be welcome.
