Arthur W. Hargrave

Arthur W. Hargrave of Waukesha died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at The Virginia Health and Rehabilitation Center at age 90. He was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Waukesha to Arthur C. and Katherine (nee Hoppe) Hargrave.

Arthurís great-grandparents, Isaac and Elizabeth Smart, were the parents of the first non-American Indian child born in Waukesha County. Arthur and his wife, Barbara, farmed their whole life in Genesee Depot and Mukwonago on the land now occupied by Home Depot, Wal-Mart and a medical clinic. On Dec. 16, 1947, he married the former Barbara Jones. She preceded him in death July 3, 1997. He had worked hard all his life and was a very honest and humble man.

He will be sadly missed by his sister, Gladys (the late Melvin) Smith of Brookfield; brother, Roy (Dorothy) Hargrave of Juneau; and sisters-in-law, Doris (Everett) Biever of Delafield and Hazel (Norman) Johnson of Delafield. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, and sisters, Hazel Klug, Lucille Greenwald and Jane Tolbert.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until the 7 p.m. funeral service today, June 4, at Randle-Dable Funeral Home, 1110 S. Grand Ave., Waukesha. Graveside services will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at Jerusalem Cemetery in Wales. Please meet at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. if you wish to join the procession to the cemetery.
