Lois May Pelikan (nee Burkholder), 86, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at AngelsGrace Hospice in Oconomowoc. She was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on Feb. 3, 1922, and was raised in Platteville.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Agnes and Gus Burkholder; her brother, Marcus Burkholder; and her adoring husband, Paul Pelikan, who proposed on Lancaster Road in Platteville before they moved to Waukesha.

She is the dear mother of Paula Raebel of Waukesha, Robert (Ann) Pelikan of Waukesha, Debra (Jeff) Schuhwerck of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Donna (Joseph) Boxhorn of Wind Lake; loving grandmother of Steven (Carmela) Pelikan, Corrie (Chad) Randall, Sally (Larry) Granec, Peggy (Mark) Tilley, David Pelikan, Amanda (Michael) Michell, Bethany (Dave) Pulkowski, Donna Schuhwerck and Jenny Schuhwerck; and proud great-grandmother of Isabela and Angelina Pelikan, Logan Paul Michell, Olivia and Lillian Granec, Joshua and Owen Randall and Grace Tilley. She is further survived by her sister, Crescent (Harry) Vale of Albany, and her brothers, Walter (Jane) Burkholder of Madison and James (Joyce) Burkholder of Madison.

Lois was known for her keen intelligence and wit, her singing (I love you a bushel and a peck), her ability to recite countless poems (Little Red Shawl was a family favorite), standing on her head and her unforgettable swan dance. She valued family, service, thrift, finding the silver lining in everything, and her favorite place was at home with coffee brewing, where everyone left feeling better than they had when they arrived.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. until the 3 p.m memorial service Sunday, June 22, at First United Methodist Church, 121 Wisconsin Ave., Waukesha, with the Rev. Dan Schwerin officiating.
