Mary M. Dirkse

Feb. 24, 1948 - March 6, 2008

Mary M. Dirkse of Palmyra died Thursday, March 6, 2008, from complications of kidney cancer. Mary was born Feb. 24, 1948, to Jim and Anne (Schilt) Dirkse.

She graduated from Palmyra High School in 1966 and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1971. Her employment included 18 years at Alpha Cast-Whitewater and 20 years at ATP-Elkhorn. Mary was a member of Palmyra United Methodist Church. She also served as a Methodist layspeaker for the churches of Troy Center, Hebron, Pleasant Valley, Siloam, Little Prairie and Palmyra. Her sense of humor and caring attitude defined her. Mary enjoyed writing poetry, reading, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles and the Green Bay Packers.

She is survived by her sister, Delores (Terry) Burrington of Palmyra and her aunts, Doris Stephen of Dousman, Shirley (Ralph) Boos of Rome, Sophie Schilt of Argyle and their families. She is further survived by many cousins of the Harriet Piek, Alma Anderson, Peter Schilt and Bud Dirkse families. Her friends Janet, Barb, Millie, Jean, Debbie and Evelyn were very important to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. celebration of life Saturday, March 15, at Palmyra United Methodist Church, 122 N. Fifth St., Palmyra, with the Rev. Karen Klatt officiating. It was Mary’s wish to be cremated.

Mary has requested no flowers. Any expression of sympathy you wish to extend may be made to Powers Memorial Library of Palmyra, Rainbow Hospice, the Country Nurse of Jefferson or the church of your choice.
