Dr. Gordon R. Folsom

Dr. Gordon R. Folsom of Waukesha died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at age 83. He was born in South Berwick, Maine, on Sept. 12, 1942, the son of Raymond and Louise (nee Hasty) Folsom.

He married Ellen (nee Pinkham) on June 12, 1948. Dr. Folsom was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and held a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He had been the Mary Robertson Williams professor of English at Carroll College, where he joined the faculty in 1953. He was emeritus professor of English at the time of his death. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching named Dr. Folsom Wisconsin Professor of the Year in 1989 in a program recognizing the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country.

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Ellen, along with his daughters, Betsey Folsom of Milwaukee and Susan (Mark) Berman of Kingston, R.I. His sister, Ruth Howarth of South Berwick, Maine, along with other relatives and many friends, further survive him.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at Humphrey Memorial Chapel, Carroll College, 238 N. East Ave., Waukesha, with the Rev. William Humphreys presiding.

In lieu of flowers, a fund in Dr. Folsomís name is being set up for the English Department at Carroll College.
