Allan James Gilbertson

Allan James Gilbertson, 76, of 1020 Harmony Circle S.E., passed away March 13, 2008, at his winter home in Green Valley, Ariz. He was born May 13, 1931, in Janesville, the son of Julius Gilbertson and Sylvia (Finn) Gilbertson.

Al graduated from Janesville High School in 1949 and attended St. Olaf College. He spent time in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He married Jolene Shields on Nov. 29,1952, and moved to Florida, where he completed his tour of Navy duty. Al worked as a sales engineer for Beloit Corp/Harnischfeger, retiring in 1994. Al was a member of First Lutheran Church, Blackhawk Golden "K" Kiwanis Club, Elkís Lodge and an early member of Blackhawk Curling Club. Al enjoyed skeet and trap shooting, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed foreign travel.

Al Gilbertson is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jolene; two daughters, Kerrie (Kevin) Colwell of Middleton and Nancy Jo Gilbertson Haase of Pewaukee; one son, Jay Gilbertson of McFarland; five wonderful grandsons, Theran (Jenn) Colwell, Ryan Colwell, Ross and Grant Gilbertson, and Tyler Gilbertson-Haase. He is also survived by his mother, Sylvia Gilbertson. Since Al was an only child, he adopted Joleneís siblings as his own, Bruce and Linda Otterburg, and Steve and Nancy Shields. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father; granddaughter, Kera Jo Haase; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Erwin and Marjorie Shields; and adoptive siblings, Karla and Bob Rabuck.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2008, at First Lutheran Church, 612 N. Randall Ave., Janesville, with the Rev. George Bauman officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. Friday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be at a later date in Hillside Cemetery, Whitewater.
