Dr. Richard E. Offerman D.D.S

Dr. Richard E. Offerman D.D.S. passed away Friday, May 2, 2008, at age 72. He was born June 28, 1935, in Madison.
He was the husband and best friend of Jacqueline (nee Davies); beloved dad of Cindy (Scott) Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., Stephen (Maureen) Offerman of Milwaukee, John (Lisa) Behling of Knoxville, Tenn., Scott Offerman of Colorado Springs and Nicholas (Dr. Shannon) Offerman of Cincinnati; and loving grandfather of Emily and Ellen Smith, Anthony Offerman and Kaitlyn and Lauren Behling. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Jean Davies; brother-in-law, Jeffrey (Carol) Davies; his aunt, Pauline Nichols of Walworth; his cousins, Anne, Bud (Peggy) and Jay Nichols; other relatives and many friends. He is also survived by his dog, Pepper.
Dr. Offerman was preceded in death by his parents, "Speed" Offerman and Gertrude (nee Nichols) Offerman, and his uncle, Donald Nichols.
Dr. Offerman had a private orthodontics practice in Waukesha for 38 years and also practiced in Wales. Dr. "O" retired in 2001.
He attended Randall Grade School in Waukesha and was a 1953 graduate of Waukesha High School. After entering Carroll College in Waukesha, Dr. Offerman was affiliated with Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, was president of his fraternity pledge class and was elected to the Beta, Beta, Beta Honorary Biological Society. He participated in varsity athletics, including basketball, wrestling and tennis and was a member of the C Club letterman’s society.
In 1956, Dr. Offerman entered Marquette University Dental School in Milwaukee and was affiliated with the Delta Sigma Delta professional dental fraternity. He graduated from Marquette University Dental School in 1960.
Dr. Offerman interned in oral surgery from 1960 to 1961 at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany, N.Y. From 1961 to 1963, he did post-graduate work in orthodontic education at Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, N.Y. He was licensed to practice dentistry in Wisconsin and New York.
In 1963, he began private practice in Waukesha.
Dr. Offerman was a member of the following: Wisconsin Dental Association, Waukesha County Dental Society, State Bureau of Handicapped Children, American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, Midwestern Society of Orthodontists, Wisconsin Society of Orthodontists and the International Association of Aesthetic Orthodontists (invitation only).
He was past president of the Waukesha County Dental Society; a member of the Council on Practice Administration of the American Association of Orthodontics; past president of the Wisconsin Society of Orthodontists; chairman of the scholarship committee and a member of the board of directors of the National Foundation; chairman of the dental health and education committee and a member of the board of directors of the Waukesha County Dental Society; a delegate from the Waukesha County Dental Society for the Wisconsin Dental Association; a member of the American Association of Orthodontists Task Force on Orthodontic Insurance; president of the Eastman Orthodontic Alumni Association; and chairman of peer review for the Wisconsin Orthodontic Society for seven years.
Dr. Offerman was an associate professor and lecturer at the Marquette University School of Dentistry, Graduate School of Orthodontics from 1965 to 1973 and was presently a guest lecturer at the dental school.
His publications included "A Diastema Closing Device" in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics in July 1984; "Basic Considerations for Orthodontic Procedures by Both the General Practitioner and the Orthodontist" in the Wisconsin Dental Association Journal in May 1968; and "Facial Assymetry in Cleft Palate Individuals" in Cleft Palate Journal in 1963.
A memorial visitation for Dr. Offerman will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, May 9, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 424 Hyde Park Ave., Waukesha. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, also at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
