Joseph J. Ryan

Joseph J. Ryan of Waukesha passed away on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008 at LindenGrove Nursing Home at age 80. He was born on Feb. 15, 1928 in Hartford to Joseph and Olga Ryan.

Joe is survived by two brothers, Frank (Irene) and Don (Joan), and one sister, Loretta (Jim) Tucker, who are now living in Indiana and Illinois. Joe’s family moved to Milwaukee, where he attended school at St. Thomas, Messmer High School and Marquette University.

Joe and his beloved wife, Jackie, were married at St. Leo’s Church on June 11, 1949. He was the loving father of Julie Butenhoff, Mary (Jim Pendergast) Ryan, Pete (Linda Schneider) Ryan and Carrie Ryan Dakin. Joe was the cherished grandfather of Geoff Cooper, Eric (Laura) Cooper, Moriah (Karim Si-tayeb) Iverson and Bethany (Jason Noer) Iverson. He was also the proud great-grandfather of John Ryan Cooper and Escher Keltgen.

Joe worked for Wisconsin Centrifugal for 35 years as a sales engineer. After that, he volunteered at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. Joe and Jackie shared many hobbies, including philately and inch to the foot miniatures. Joe spent many happy hours in his workshop with his favorite hobbies, building ships and radio control airplanes.

He belonged to The Flying Electrons. H e also belonged to many philatelic societies, including the Waukesha Stamp Club, Northwest Philatelic, American Philatelic, First Day Society and the Freaks and Oddities Club. Some of his miniatures are on display at the St. Louis Miniature Museum. He also enjoyed fishing, golf, drawing, painting and gourmet cooking.

Joe was well known for his sense of humor, his storytelling, his generosity and his kindness.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service on Friday, Nov. 21 at Church and Chapel Funeral Home, 380 Bluemound Road, Waukesha. Private burial will be held in Southern Wisconsin Veteran’s Ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Joe’s name may be directed to LindenGrove in Waukesha.
