David A. Sauer

May 30, 1926 - Nov. 22, 2008

David A. Sauer, 82, formerly of Oconomowoc, passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at his home. David was born May 30, 1926, in Addison Center, the son of Paul J. and Theckla C. (Gundrum) Sauer.

Dave served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Panama Canal. He married the former Carole Casper on June 14, 1952, in Newburg. Dave had been a teacher at Endeavor High School for two years, Plymouth High School for 15 years and had been the math coordinator and athletic director at Oconomowoc High School for more than 20 years. He had served as executive secretary for the Little Ten Conference. Dave was a member of St. Bernardís Catholic Church in Watertown and a former member of St. Jeromeís Catholic Church in Oconomowoc, where he served on the parish council.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Carole; their children, Sarah Sauer of Hartland, Karl Sauer of Milwaukee, Christopher Sauer of McFarland, Tresa Knutson of Watertown and Rita (Russell) Sauer-Hissom of DeForest; grandchildren, Jessica (Andrew) Schilling, Cecelia and Paul Wisner, Kristin, Brooke and Taylor Sauer, Chelsea Knutson and Rose and Rory Hissom; a sister, Sister Lucille Sauer OSF of Cambellsport; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Hughes of West Bend. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Gilbert, Silverius and Roy Sauer.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. memorial service Saturday, Nov. 29, at Schmutzler-Vick Funeral Home And Cremation Service in Watertown with the Rev. Thomas Marr officiating. Family burial will be in St. Jeromeís Cemetery in Oconomowoc.

Memorials to the Oconomowoc Scholarship Fund would be appreciated.

Dave enjoyed all sports - he was an athlete, coach and spectator. He loved a good brat, summer sausage "sammy" and spending time with his family.
