Cleone Marian Flood (nee Hovland), 87, of Madison and formerly of Waukesha, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, suffering just a short illness after a long and grace-filled life. She was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Bloomer, to William and Rose (nee Bemel) Hovland.
Cleone was married to Joseph Bernard Flood on Sept. 4, 1944, in Bloomer, and they enjoyed 45 years together. They raised their six children in Cornell, Milwaukee and Waukesha.
Cleone attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a young woman and received an associate's degree in older adult recreation from the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha in 1981. She inspired a swimming program for older adults in Waukesha and worked as a swim instructor and a teacherﾕs aide. She was "Irish by marriage" and she and Bernie celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 1984 with a trip to Ireland. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her generous spirit and her wonderful sense of humor. She loved to cook and we loved her cooking!
She is survived by her children, Rosann (Lawrence) Mathias of Milwaukee, Patrick (Bridget) Flood of Hillpoint, Joseph (Susan) Flood of Waukesha, Marianne (Kenneth) Paker of Madison and William (Joanne) Flood of Marathon; daughter-in-law, Maggie Flood of Waukesha; brother, Lynn (Betty) Hovland of University City, Mo.; sister-in-law, Norma Hovland of Bloomer; brother- and sister-in-law, Gerald and Rita Flood of Mesa, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Frank Rivas of Menomonie; and sister-in-law, Donna Flood of Chippewa Falls. Cleone was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie, in 1989; her son, Robert, in 2002; her brother, Ted; and her sister, Dorothy.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until the 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial today, Oct. 2, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 225 S. Hartwell Ave., Waukesha. Burial will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at St. Paulﾕs Catholic Cemetery in Bloomer.
